Companies today are locating where they can find a pipeline of talent. Young skilled workers, often millennials, are providing a significant portion of that pipeline of talent today. Cities that are attracting those young skilled workers are becoming more and more appealing to companies seeking new locations, which are now looking at college graduation retention and migration patterns as part of their location search.
The top four states for net migration between 2012 and 2015 were North Dakota, Florida, Nevada and Colorado, which also all rank in the top 10 states for average business birth rates over the same time period. In fact, Colorado’s population ages 25 to 29 grew at more than double the national rate between 2013 and 2015. States that are able to attract, retain and grow this young pipeline of talent should continue to see the strongest economic growth.
